What are DCPD Resins?

Unsaturated Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) Polyester Resins are characterized by the presence of dicyclopentadiene, an unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbon, within the polymer chain.

This class of resins offers adjustable reactivity due to the varying percentage of DCPD, which allows for the modulation of the polymer’s average molecular weight. As a result, it is possible to produce low styrene content (LSC) resins, leading to reduced emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) during production.

DCPD Resins Features

  • Good Chemical Resistance and Low Shrinkage: These resins offer excellent chemical and hydrolysis resistance while ensuring a significant reduction in shrinkage after polymerization.
  • Excellent Filler Wettability: Thanks to the intrinsic versatility of this resin family, it is possible to develop custom formulations that ensure optimal filler wettability for specific applications.
  • Outstanding Toughness: When reinforced with glass fibers, DCPD resins demonstrate a superior ability to absorb energy and undergo plastic deformation before breaking, outperforming other polyester resins.
  • Superior Hydrolysis Resistance: DCPD resins exhibit enhanced resistance to weathering agents such as rain, snow, and humidity compared to other resin types.
  • Low Styrene Emissions: Due to their reduced styrene content, these resins significantly lower styrene emissions in the workplace, promoting a safer and cleaner environment.

DCPD Resins Applications

  • Water Treatment Plants: Thanks to their excellent corrosion resistance, DCPD polyester resins are widely used in the construction of tanks and piping systems for wastewater and drainage treatment.
  • Reinforced Plastics: The exceptional chemical and hydrolysis resistance of these resins makes them ideal for use in reinforced plastics. Highly unsaturated versions are also employed in structural laminates that require high thermo-mechanical performance.
  • Fillers and Putties: DCPD resins are extensively used in the formulation of stone fillers and automotive body putties due to their low shrinkage, fast curing, strong adhesion, and excellent flexibility.
  • Nautical: With their resistance to thermal shocks, water, and osmotic blistering, DCPD resins are often applied as a skincoat layer between the gelcoat and structural reinforcement in boat hull manufacturing, offering a cost-effective alternative to more expensive vinylester solutions.
