What are Aliphatic Resins

Aliphatic resins are an important class of thermoplastic polymers, with their name derived from the chemical structure of aliphatic hydrocarbons used in their formulation. The aliphatic groups replace the aromatic compounds present in orthophthalic and isophthalic resins.

The variety of aliphatic hydrocarbons that can be incorporated into the resin allows for the development of a wide range of solutions tailored to the specific characteristics of the application.Some of the most common aliphatic hydrocarbons used in the formulation of this type of resin include tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (THPA), hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA), and trimethylolpropane (TMP).

Aliphatic Resins Features

  • UV Stability: This type of resin is renowned for its resistance to ultraviolet (UV) light, making it ideal for applications exposed to constant sunlight, such as coatings and paints for outdoor use. It is important to note that these resins resist yellowing even after prolonged sun exposure.
  • Chemical Resistance: These resins offer remarkable chemical resistance to acids, bases, and other corrosive agents. This property makes them suitable for chemical storage tanks, pipe coatings, and chemical containers.
  • Flexibility and Durability: Aliphatic resins are notably flexible and provide excellent long-term durability, allowing them to withstand mechanical stress without easily deforming or breaking.

Aliphatic Resin Applications

  • Gelcoat: Thanks to its excellent resistance to yellowing and corrosive agents, this type of resin is widely used in the formulation of gelcoats of various kinds, both in the marine industry as well as in transportation and construction.
  • Solid Surface: This resin is also used in the production of solid surface products due to its excellent flexibility and its ability to maintain color stability over time. 
  • Coatings: Aliphatic resin is widely employed in the production of paints and protective coatings for metal, plastic, and wooden surfaces. These coatings provide long-lasting protection against wear, abrasion, and damage caused by weathering. They are also used in the creation of coatings for industrial and commercial flooring, known for their strength, chemical resistance, and ease of cleaning.
  • Automotive Paints: Aliphatic resins are a key component of high-quality automotive paints. These paints provide a brilliant and durable finish, protecting the vehicle’s surface from corrosion and the harmful effects of UV rays.
