What are Orthophthalic Resins?
Orthophthalic Resins are a significant segment of the unsaturated polyester resin family and were among the first developed in the industry.
They are distinguished by the presence of the orthophthalic group within the polymer chain, achieved through the use of phthalic anhydride in their formulation.

- Thermal Stability and Mechanical Strength: Orthophthalic resins with high unsaturation levels offer good rigidity and heat resistance, featuring a high glass transition temperature.
They also demonstrate strong mechanical properties, showing notable tensile strength, especially when reinforced with glass fibers.
- Versatility and Reactivity: These resins exhibit highly adjustable reactivity, allowing their use in a wide range of applications. They can be processed even in cold winter temperatures without issues. Orthophthalic resins are suitable for various manufacturing processes, including compression and injection molding, spray applications, mineral-filled mixtures, and hot extrusion.
- Chemical Resistance and Yellowing: This resin type shows limited resistance to chemical agents and osmosis. Additionally, when exposed to direct sunlight, it tends to yellow more quickly than other resin types.
- Construction Industry: Orthophthalic resins are widely used in the production of laminates for panels, walls, and smooth or corrugated roofing. They are also applied in the manufacturing of artificial stone, later processed for use as flooring and cladding. These resins can also be employed in the creation of meshes and reinforcements for excavation work, as well as in the production of thresholds, steps, and windowsills.
- Composite Manufacturing: Orthophthalic resins are considered a key component in the fabrication of polymer composites, which are widely used to produce various industrial parts for sectors like furniture, agricultural machinery, livestock equipment, fashion and design, and even hobbies and entertainment.
- Transportation Sector: These resins are commonly used to manufacture lightweight and durable components for commercial vehicles and railway systems.
- Stone Treatment: Orthophthalic resins are an essential ingredient in many mastic and adhesive formulations for natural stone and are also used in the production of abrasives for stone materials and metals.
