What is Polyester Resin?

Unsaturated polyester resin is a liquid thermosetting plastic with varying viscosity, commonly used in the industry. It represents a broad group of synthetic organic polymers derived from the polyesterification of raw materials with different chemical structures and intrinsic properties.

These resins are commonly referred to by the English acronym UPR (Unsaturated Polyester Resins). The base unsaturated polyester is dissolved in specific reactive solvents, such as styrene and other acrylates (e.g., Methyl Methacrylate - MMA).

This product is often reinforced with glass fibers, resulting in a composite material known as Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), commonly called "fiberglass". In other applications, the resin can be mixed with mineral fillers to create composite products.Thanks to its versatility, this type of resin can be used across a wide range of temperatures and application conditions, allowing the creation of a vast array of products.

Characteristics of Polyester Resin

  • Unsaturated polyester resin has the unique ability to transition from a liquid/viscous state to a solid state through the formation of bonds in the linear chain of the polyester group.
  • The hardening of the resin occurs through the addition of organic peroxide catalysts, which, under the influence of heat or specific activators known as accelerators or promoters, decompose into free radicals. This facilitates radical polymerization, resulting in the formation of a networked structure.
  • The specific properties of polyester resin, such as hardness, toughness, elasticity, wetting properties, drying speed, adhesion, chemical resistance, and thermo-mechanical properties, are determined by the raw materials used during the production phase and the process control methodology. Numerous additives are available to modify the rheological and technical properties, enabling the creation of a customized formulation tailored to specific application needs.

Polyester Resin Applications

  • Unsaturated polyester resin, when reinforced with fibers, is widely used in the production of components with specific structural and dimensional requirements. This reinforced resin type is commonly employed, for example, in the production of hulls and marine components in the shipbuilding industry, as well as in the automotive industry for manufacturing lightweight and durable parts, such as bumpers and bodywork components.
  • In Construction, polyester resin is used in the production of pipes, profiles, and composite panels. This resin type is also applied in advanced materials engineering, contributing to the production of lightweight and strong composites, particularly in the wind energy sector.
  • Additionally, unsaturated polyester resin is used in the creation of furniture elements, craftsmanship, and the production of ducts and tanks. It is also utilized in the sanitary ware manufacturing sector, in the treatment of natural stones, in the adhesives industry, for synthetic stone surfaces, and in the production of high-end buttons.
